How can I get recognition for what I have learnt before?

The recognition of prior learning process (RPL/RCC) or recognition of current competence (RCC) process acknowledges your skill and knowledge gained through:

  • ormal training conducted by industry or educational agencies in Australia or overseas;
  • work experience (informal training) and/or
  • life experience

The RPL/RCC process allows individuals wishing to know what skills they have developed through life and work experience to be recognised and matched against formal qualifications. It also allows enterprises wishing to have their staff assessed to identify training gaps and workable training solutions. RPL/RCC is an option, not a requirement.

However, by doing so, you may be exempt from some modules of the program, resulting in less time commitment in the actual program. The results of RPL/RCC assessment include:

  • A Certificate of Attendance at completion of the course.
  • A Statement of Attainment recording the competencies recognised as a result of the assessment taking place. These may be used as credits towards gaining full qualifications.
  • Identification of the need to complete all of the required learning to meet the national standard.

The RPL/RCC process

It is the applicants responsibility to apply for RPL/RCC. Make an appointment to discuss the RPL/RCC process. At the initial appointment you will be advised of the steps in the RPL/RCC process. There are four separate assessment steps outlined below:

Summary of the 4 step assessment process

The following process provides an overview of the steps involved in the assessment process:

STEP 1: INTRODUCTION TO WORKPLACE ASSESSMENT

This is conducted as for individuals or in a group briefing session, for up to two hours.

METHOD:
Workshops will be organised for individuals or groups between 5-7 participants to give Candidates an overview of the assessment objective, the overview of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), the benefits for the organisation and for the individual and the process involved including the appeals process.

OUTCOME:
A presentation briefing to cover the following topics:

  • Background to workplace assessment and coaching
  • Organisational aspirations for Project Managers
  • Overview of the PM qualification
  • Benefits of workplace assessment and coaching
  • Assessment Process (maximum 12 months)

STEP 2: AGREE ON PORTFOLIO OF EVIDENCE

This step will ensure the Candidate and the Assessor agree on the type and level of evidence that the Candidate will present during the formal assessment in Step 4.

METHOD:
The Candidate and the Assessor will review and agree on the type and level of evidence required by the Candidate to develop to demonstrate his / her competency in Project Management at the AQF level being assessed on.

OUTCOME:
Agreed forms of evidence that the Candidate will prepare for the formal assessment. If gaps are identified, this may lead into project management paths. Suggested development paths could be:

  • Additional Reading (I.e. PMBoK 2004)
  • Project Management Training
  • Coaching
  • On the job experience

STEP 3: COACHING AND GATHERING EVIDENCE PORTFOLIO

Coaching is available to participants to gather their Portfolio of Evidence.

METHOD:
An initial one-on-one interview will be conducted with the Candidate by a qualified blueVisions Assessor to obtain agreement on the suitable qualification level. This is the opportunity to agree on the forms of evidence to be provided to the Assessor during the formal assessment. To assist the Candidate, coaching is available to participants to gather their portfolio of evidence for the formal assessment.

OUTCOME:

  • Record of initial interview
  • The Candidate will be provided one-on-one coaching to gather the evidence
  • This coaching session will help to fill the potential gaps in the competency of the Candidate
  • Agreement on the AQF level (4,5 or 6) to be assessed
  • Agreement on the evidence to be provided by the Candidate

STEP 4: WORKPLACE ASSESSMENT

A two hour formal assessment with the Candidate.

METHOD:
In a secured and quiet environment, the Candidate is interviewed by blueVisions qualified Assessors and the Candidate presenting their portfolio of evidence. The Candidate will be informed whether they are competent, partially competent or not yet competent. Appeals process is re-iterated to the Candidate to ensure fairness of the assessment process.

OUTCOME:

  • Evidence is provided by the Candidate
  • Competent, Partially Competent or Not Yet Competent decision is made
  • Appeals process (if judged Not yet competent) is re-iterated
  • The Assessor will sign off interview report.

Program Outcomes

The Assessor will advise you of the result of your RPL/RCC application at the conclusion of the interview. There are three possible outcomes:

  • Full RPL/RCC = recognition of all competencies
  • Partial RPL/RCC = recognition of some competencies (further assessment required)
  • Deny RPL/RCC = unsuccessful recognition of any competencies

Individuals who are granted RPL/RCC will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the relevant modules. If you are not granted RPL/RCC, you may decide to accept or reject the decision of the Assessor. Discuss it first with your Assessor. If you understand why your application was not successful it will give you confidence to decide whether or not to appeal the decision. You will be given information about the appeal process at this time. RPL/RCC may not be appropriate for all students. You may still decide to participate in a module despite having achieved that particular learning outcome.

Mutual Recognition

blueVisions recognises the AQF qualifications and Statements of Attainment issued by any other Registered Training Organisation across Australia. These qualifications or Statements of Attainment can be used as part of your evidence submission in the RPL/RCC process.
